Flip a question mark on its head and you will see an image that resembles a fishhook. Questions hook ideas, opinions, intuitions, aspirations–you name it. A question mark doesn’t look as threatening and potentially lethal as a fishhook. That’s unfortunate – it really should. Ask a stupid question, hook a stupid answer. The old adage – “there’s no such thing as a stupid question” – is sheer nonsense.
Argument
“There’s no such thing as a stupid question.”
Counterargument
Perhaps, if you are trying to promote inquiry, curiosity, and perception checking this argument might have some merit. But the argument is also deceiving. Everyone has heard a stupid question. And everyone has probably asked a stupid question they regretted asking. So let’s be candid – there are indeed stupid questions. Some are just zanier than others. Help us find out by entering your own suggestions. We may include it on the poll on the right hand side of the page to see if everyone else thinks it’s a stupid question too.
